The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s Hi-Desert Film Institute’s film selections are curated and presented by program directors Patricia Vernhes and Matthew Caron.
PATRICIA VERNHES
Patricia Vernhes is a multi-disciplinary artist whose professional musical and visual paths have spanned over two decades and under many monikers. Born in Poland, Vernhes grew up touring with her step father’s widely known punk rock band, and shortly after, she moved as a teenager to London, where she began her music education and career. Her debut solo album released by Sony Records in 1998 is considered the first major release to open an era of electronic pop music in Poland. During her London years she worked as a solo artist and went on to form the bands Children, Flykkiller, and Patti Yang Group. She also collaborated on over 20 film soundtracks.
MATTHEW CARON
Matthew Caron is a filmmaker, writer, visual artist, and educator living in Southern California's Hi-Desert. He has written about film, visual art, and literature for VICE, and hosted a weekly radio program on East Village Radio, Bim Bam Boom. He has shown work and performed at the Art After 5 series at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Red Bull Music Academy, and The Creators Project. His music videos have been featured on MTV, Pitchfork, VICE, Noisey, Stereogum, and Spin. Most recently, he edited and helped to produce Pines, a psychological thriller starring Michael Parks and Una Blade. He studied film and television at New York University and will soon return to school to pursue a master's in education to combine his love of storytelling and image making with teaching.
